Choose the hour
If you are planning some great shots of beautiful landscapes choose the hours early in the morning or later in afternoon. Choose the time when the sun is low and not out in its full glory when the light is not too bright or contrasting. The colors at this hour should be subtle and pale. The hours soon after dawn and dusk are called magic hours in photography.
Composing the picture
Composition is important in any photography particularly in a landscape. Depending on what you want to make the focus of your attention use the rule of thirds or triangles to divide the frame into important sections. In the rule of thirds, the top on- third can be that of the sky. For instance the horizon can be used to divide the picture into one-third on top and two-thirds in the bottom part. In the three triangles you can place a particularly strong element in one triangle of the picture. There are other methods too. But if you feel that your picture is better off not following rules just follow your instincts and compose a picture that you like.
Research
You don't just walk in to a place or location and find the best shot. It does not work that way. To make a photograph work you need to go out to the place several times and choose the perfect location, time and day when everything is right. Sometimes you might have to go back many times to get the shot you want.
Use polarizing filters
A circular polarizing filter is the constant companion of many landscape photographers. This filter helps cut out glares and reflections. It also increases the contrast and color intensity in the picture.
Sharpness of image
Photographers wish that their landscape looks as sharp in the foreground as in the background. That rock and bit of grass in front should be as clear as the distant horizon. To get this sort of image you need to know the principle of depth of field. Use a small aperture which makes most area in the picture both the area just in front and that beyond appears rather sharp. When using small apertures use a slow shutter speed and make use of the tripod.
Impact of man on nature
Don't just focus on getting great landscape photographs. Hunting for the most beautiful landscapes is okay, but you should look at the impact of man on nature. How is over farming as devastated a landscape, or the effects of industrial effluents on a river are as haunting and disturbingly beautiful as a untouched landscape. These thoughtful photographs make touching subjects for a photographer concerned about man's impact on nature.
